The Newest Trends in the Domtar Paper Gallery

The Domtar Paper Gallery is one of the few true oases of print left on the internet. Powered wholly by your submissions, we highlight remarkable works of print created on Domtar paper. This year is off to another incredible start, seeing new print trends and fresh submissions from old friends and captivating debuts from new ones. Whether you’re a creative in need of inspiration, a printer eyeing the latest trends or a fan of print with a few free minutes, you’ve come to the right place.

High Jewelry Collection – Birks Group

Our first feature of the day comes from the Birks Group, a designer, manufacturer, and retailer of jewelry, timepieces, silverware and gifts. Printed on Cougar® by Montroy, a Montreal-based printer, their goal was to reflect the High Jewelry collection from Birks: simple, refined, majestic, and high-end. Like a box, the cover is printed on a large format press with 16 passes of white LED ink. This allowed them to create an extremely precise relief image, providing more detailed results than a traditional emboss.

Montroy recently entered the piece into the This contest is unique in that judges look not only at the design but also at the production process, lending an added level of prestige to their awards. Categories range from magazines to labels and everything in between.

The white ink also forms a different, rougher texture to the touch than the interior leaflet, which was printed using a four color process on 110 lb. Cougar Cover, Smooth Finish. As a result, the photos have a warmer, more subdued effect as compared to the rest of the piece.

Finally, the leaflet, representing this magnificent collection, was glued between cover 3 and cover 4, which were doubled for the occasion and like a diamond, the result is brilliant.

The Hip Trip

Our next piece comes from a Gallery mainstay—Mitchell, who is Print Actions Canadian Print Awards 2023’s Most Environmentally Progressive Printing Company and Best in Show winner.

Their submission, “The Hip Trip,” is a promotional project developed to showcase the extraordinary capabilities of their new Landa S10P Nanographic® Sheetfed Inkjet presspress, the only one of its kind in Canada. The Hip Trip revolves around celebrating the freedom to embark on unique travel experiences across Canada and to bring this vision to life, Mitchell worked with longtime creative partner Illustrator/Creative Director John Belisle and Adam Rogers, a talented collaborator.

Together, they crafted a modern twist on 1950’s poster culture creating a vibrant and playful set of “mini art prints” printed on 80 lb. Cougar Cover, Super Smooth Finish, and a “standard sketch and notebook” printed on 130 lb. Cougar Cover, Smooth finish (Cover) and 70 lb. Lynx Digital, Smooth Finish (Pages), that captures the essence of each unique destination in vivid fashion.

Finally, the piece comes together in a beautiful “custom package”, printed on 160 lb. Cougar Cover, Smooth Finish, embracing the freedom of the theme and putting Mitchell’s talents on display.

With Love From

Like Mitchell, Hemlock is a Paper Gallery frequenter. The Canadian-based printer thrives on its commitment to sustainable print practices and superior results through expert craftsmanship and advanced technology, and their latest submission is definitely turning heads.

Hemlock’s 2023 Holiday Wrap, “With Love From” spotlights what matters most during holiday seasons—the ways we create togetherness, even when we’re apart. Designed with the help of Red Rocket Creative, this piece is adorned with playful patterns, iconic characters, and whimsical sights from across Canada and the US.

The set includes six sheets of double-sided wrapping paper, each inspired by a different location with a meaningful connection to Hemlock, and a sticker sheet of themed stamps, all enclosed in a special case. As you explore With Love From, you’ll find that not only does the amazing printability of 70 lb. Lynx allow each sheet to reproduce that sense of holiday cheer, but the brand’s versatility ensures that the quality of the piece is consistent throughout.
